OUR HOBBIES!!!

Writer's picture: Macy OsborneMacy Osborne

The month of January is National Hobbies Month, so we decided to highlight a few of our sisters' favorite hobbies. Throughout our chapter, each member has different, yet similar interests. These bring us closer together and allow us to spend time with one another doing things we love or trying something new!

interior design

Ava Andrews ac '23

"I have always been creative and artistically inclined. It all started with my grandmother taking me antique shopping, flipping through Southern Living magazines, and having a room makeover every month or so. I came to school thinking I would be a graphic designer full time, but quickly learned that I can’t sit still for too long. I always knew I had a passion and eye for interior design, but I never thought my dream would ever be a reality. The summer of my junior year, I decided to email my resume to multiple interior firms and businesses in Columbia to see if I could even run errands to get experience. I interviewed and landed an interior design assistant job at House of Birdie Interiors and quickly realized this was something I wanted to do every day of my life! From selecting furnishings, wallpaper, hardware, and window treatments, I have loved every second!"

Tennis

Sophie Belk AC '24

"I started taking tennis lessons when I was 9 years old, and it’s made such a huge impact on me. It keeps me disciplined, strong, and develops how I think in stressful situations. Tennis was how I made so many friends and brought me so many opportunities like traveling and bettering myself. Just going to a court to practice my serve helps with stress and makes me happier. Tennis is definitely a lifelong sport, and I’m so grateful my friends pushed me to start playing at such a young age."

Running

Madelyn Gomez AC '24

"I’ve been running since joining Girls on the Run in middle school! I started out because my dad coached track and cross country, and he put on a 5k every year. I ran my first 5K with my mom, and ever since then, I have loved it. It’s an amazing outlet for me anytime I’m stressed or overwhelmed, and it’s been a great way for me to connect with other runners! Running is great because all it really requires is shoes, so I love traveling and running in new places! I now run for Carolina and absolutely love my team and all the opportunities it gives me :)"

baking & cooking

Clare Fico AC '24

"Ever since I was little, I’d watch cooking & baking shows and videos and then go try out the recipes myself. I especially loved to bake and decorate cakes and other desserts for my friends and family. It was so rewarding to see how much they enjoyed and complimented my food. Now, after lots of practice, I can give back to my loved ones even more with my skills in the kitchen by making meals and treats whenever they’d like. I’ve also gotten to enjoy making most of our Thanksgiving meals for the past few years."

Fashion & interior design

Carly Belle Jackson

"I absolutely love putting together cute, seasonal outfit collages, as well as designing bedrooms, living rooms, and fun designs! One example is my dorm room. I made a collage of what my room would look like, and it came out exactly as pictured. I absolutely love Pinterest and gaining ideas to make my own!"
