DEAR PNMs

Natalie Jiron

ADPi is getting ready for recruitment and we can't wait to see new smiling faces! Our girls remember how nerve-wracking it was going through recruitment as a PNM and would like to share some words of wisdom to help calm those first-round jitters.

Kate Shumard

Dear PNMs,

My name is Kate Shumard and I am ADPi’s Vice President of Recruitment this year! I am a rising junior from Atlanta, GA in AC ‘22.

I am so excited for the opportunity to experience recruitment from my position. I am looking forward to sharing my love for ADPi with all of you. Looking back on my freshman year, recruitment made a much larger impact than I had initially expected. Coming from out of state, I was determined to find a place that felt like home and accepted me as who I was. I had the perfect outfits picked out, ran through practice questions in my head, and had my recruitment bag packed with anything and everything I could ever need. I was fully prepared for the weeks ahead - or so I thought. Nothing could have prepared me for the love and acceptance I experienced every time I entered the ADPi house.

Each round I would scan the list of houses I got back, hoping to see ADPi. I remember walking into the house, and the girls I had talked to in previous rounds remembered me, hugged me, and assured me they were happy to see me again. ADPi created a feeling of “home” for me that I was searching for.

As you go through recruitment, the biggest piece of advice I can give you is to search for that feeling of home. Be your most true, authentic self and you will find a chapter that embraces you with open arms! Take full advantage of all recruitment has to offer. Build relationships with the girls in your Pi Chi groups, some of them will end up being your sisters! Have as much fun as possible and remember that everything happens for a reason. I can’t wait to meet you all and hope you find your “home” through this wild and wonderful process!

JOSIE-GRAY KOVAL

Dear PNMs,

Hey y'all! My name is Josie-Gray Koval! I am a rising senior from Charleston, SC in AC ‘21.

When I moved into college three short years ago, I had no idea what to expect from recruitment. I wanted to keep an open mind throughout the process and most importantly, find the people that reminded me most of home. Coming from a town nearby, I was very intent on paving my own path during recruitment and finding a sorority experience of my own. As I walked into ADPi for one of my first parties of recruitment, it really set the bar high. I felt a huge sense of comfort throughout my conversations and felt like I was talking to girls who reminded me of my friend group growing up. As I kept coming back to ADPi, I kept seeing the genuine love and appreciation that these girls had for one another. It was undeniable. When I experienced those contagious feelings within the room, it set a precedent for the rest of my recruitment experience. This genuine comfort I was feeling was something I was not particularly seeking within a house, but one of the things that stood out the most throughout the remainder of my process. As the rounds kept passing and the houses kept narrowing down, it became more and more obvious to me where my home was.

Once Bid Day came, my best friend and I kept it a secret as to where each of us had chosen. As we opened our Bid Day shirts, we realized we both chose to run home to ADPi. This shows that you do end up where you are supposed to be and that being yourself throughout the recruitment process is in your best interest. The lifelong friends I have made through this chapter have exceeded all expectations I could have ever imagined. Thanks to ADPi, I will have memories and friends to keep well beyond these four short years at UofSC. I am so excited to meet you all and can't wait to watch everyone find their home away from home!

Alexa Psaros

Dear PNMs,

Hi everyone! I’m Alexa Psaros, and I am in AC’22.

Coming from the small state of Delaware, I was nervous about the recruitment process and didn’t know what to expect. My biggest piece of advice would be to trust the process and be confident in yourself! Having no prior knowledge of the sororities allowed me to go in with an open mind. With no set expectations, I was able to make genuine bonds and form my own opinions. Do not be afraid to let your personality shine through! I will never forget the feeling of running home to ADPi on bid day knowing I found a group of girls who accepted me for who I am. Staying true to myself is what led me to find my forever friends. We cannot wait for you all to begin this journey and become one step closer to finding your forever home!

Averi Irick

Dear PNMs,

Hey y’all! My name is Avery Irick and I am in AC ‘23!

I’m from Camden, South Carolina which is only about 40 minutes away from Columbia. My first piece of advice is to make sure you have a good portable fan in your bag. It is very hot in Columbia during recruitment and my fan saved me. I still use it sometimes too!

Going into recruitment I was very nervous for the first day because I did not know what to expect. At first, I was scared to ask my Pi Chis questions, but I quickly realized they were there to help and support me through the recruitment process. Ask them as many questions as you want, they have been in your shoes before and want to help you!

My last piece of advice would be to stay true to yourself! Everyone is incredibly unique in their own way. By doing this you will find your perfect fit just like I did. I could not be more grateful for the friends I have now and I am so proud to be able to call these girls my sisters. I cannot wait to meet everyone and see everyone do amazing things!

We hope everyone had a great summer and can't wait for recruitment!
